How to Care for Dyed Fabrics: Do's and Don'ts
Dyed fabrics are beautiful, but they require proper care to maintain their color and longevity. Whether you're a garment manufacturer advising your customers, or a boutique owner handling inventory, these tips will help.
Washing Do's
- Cold water wash — Always use cold or lukewarm water; hot water causes color bleed
- Mild detergent — Use a gentle, color-safe detergent
- Turn inside out — Wash dyed garments inside out to protect the outer surface
- Separate colors — Dark dyed fabrics can bleed; wash separately for the first 2-3 washes
- Short wash cycle — Reduce mechanical friction to preserve dye integrity
Washing Don'ts
- Don't use bleach — Bleach destroys dye molecules and ruins the color
- Don't wring — Wringing dyed fabrics causes uneven fading and distortion
- Don't soak long — Extended soaking leads to color run, especially in the first few washes
- Don't machine dry on high heat — Air dry in shade is always preferable
Storage Tips
- Store in cool, dry, dark places — sunlight causes gradual fading
- Use breathable cotton bags, not plastic, for long-term storage
- Keep dyed and white fabrics separated in storage
